Detox removes the drug. But what happens when you return to your life?
You can survive withdrawal and still be unprepared for sobriety.
You already know the drug is hurting you.
You don’t need another lecture about what it is doing to your body, your relationships, your finances, or your future.
And you probably don’t need another person telling you that you should “just quit.”
The problem is that the drug is still doing something for you.
Maybe it gives you the energy to work.
Maybe it makes you feel confident, social, motivated, creative, or alive.
Maybe it quiets the thoughts you cannot turn off.
Maybe it numbs emotions that feel impossible to carry.
Maybe it makes an unhealthy relationship, overwhelming job, chaotic home, or painfully empty life feel temporarily tolerable.
You can hate what the drug is doing to your life and still be terrified of who you’ll become without it.
That doesn’t make you weak.
It means the drug has become one of the only solutions you have.
PreTox helps you start building new solutions before you take that one away.
You can spend weeks in treatment, attend every class, say all the right things, and genuinely want recovery—only to return home and discover that the conditions surrounding your addiction haven’t changed.
The same triggers are waiting.
The same relationship is draining you.
The same job requires more than your body can sustainably give.
The same emotions still feel unbearable.
The same nervous system still wants relief.
The same empty hours still need to be filled.
And now the one thing that reliably changed how you felt is gone.
This is where many people begin blaming themselves.
They decide they must not want recovery badly enough. Their families assume they don’t care. Shame takes over, and another relapse becomes proof that something is fundamentally wrong with them.
But relapse doesn’t always mean someone didn’t want sobriety.
Sometimes it means they were asked to remove their primary coping mechanism before they had built anything strong enough to replace it.
PreTox was created to help close that gap.
You don’t have to wait until detox to start recovering.
PreTox is the psychological and lifestyle preparation that happens before you quit—so you aren’t returning to the same life that made the drug feel necessary.
PreTox may be for you if…
PreTox is a self-paced course for people struggling with substance dependence who want to begin preparing mentally, emotionally, physically, and practically for life after detox.
Instead of beginning with:
“How do I force myself to stop?”
PreTox helps you explore:
What is the substance currently doing for me?
What feelings, symptoms, situations, or relationships make me want to use?
What do I believe will happen if I become sober?
What would need to change for sobriety to feel livable?
What could meet my needs without creating the same consequences?
How can I begin practicing those alternatives now?
How can I create an exit strategy that is designed around my actual life?
You’ll work through seven practical steps that help you understand your addiction without shaming yourself, identify the needs beneath your drug use, experiment with alternative solutions, and begin redesigning the life you will return to after detox.
The goal is not to pretend that quitting will be easy.
The goal is to stop walking into detox emotionally blind, practically unprepared, and expected to rebuild your entire life while your body and mind are already under enormous stress.
PreTox is for the person thinking:
“I want to quit. I just don’t know how I’m supposed to live my actual life without it.”
This isn’t another lecture about why you should quit.
It’s a plan for how to begin becoming ready.
✓ You want to quit, but you’re afraid you’ll hate your life sober.
✓ You have detoxed before and struggled to stay clean afterward.
✓ You’re preparing for your first detox and want more than a withdrawal checklist.
✓ You keep postponing quitting because your current life feels impossible to manage without the drug.
✓ You’re afraid you’ll lose your motivation, confidence, creativity, social skills, or “spark.”
✓ You feel like drugs make you more capable, present, productive, or emotionally stable.
✓ You don’t want to spend the rest of your life white-knuckling cravings.
✓ You’ve tried treatment, therapy, meetings, or quitting on your own, but something still felt missing.
✓ You don’t connect with programs that tie recovery to one religion, identity, or rigid path.
✓ You’re currently in recovery and want a personalized action plan in case you feel at risk of relapse.
✓ You’re tired of being treated like addiction means you don’t care about yourself or the people you love.
✓ You want to understand what is driving your addiction instead of being told only to resist it.
What if the drug isn’t the real problem?
That does not mean the drug isn’t causing real harm.
It means drug use may be the visible solution to a deeper, less visible problem.
You may be using to change how your body feels.
To escape emotional pain.
To survive exhaustion.
To tolerate your environment.
To feel pleasure.
To create motivation.
To connect with people.
To avoid withdrawal.
To feel like a version of yourself you actually like.
If those needs remain ignored, removing the substance can leave an enormous empty space.
PreTox helps you investigate that space before detox—and begin filling it with tools, systems, boundaries, relationships, routines, and sources of relief that don’t demand the same price from your life.

How it works
The seven steps
of PreTox
Step 1
Release shame
You cannot shame yourself into becoming safe.
In this step, you’ll begin reframing addiction—not as proof that you’re weak, selfish, broken, or morally defective, but as a coping mechanism that developed for a reason.
You’ll explore how childhood conditioning, punished emotions, trauma, and harsh self-talk can train the nervous system to treat vulnerable feelings as dangerous.
You’ll begin replacing the voice that says, “I should be better than this,” with language that makes honesty and change possible.
Because when shame decreases, you can finally look directly at what is happening without needing to hide from yourself.
Step 2
Take notice
Before you can change a pattern, you have to see it clearly.
You’ll track when you use, what happens immediately before the urge, what the substance provides, and how you feel afterward.
You’ll learn to categorize drug use according to three common drivers:
Fun: boredom, socializing, routine, stimulation, or wanting to feel good
Withdrawal: using to manage physical symptoms or feel functional
Coping: using to escape, numb, control, soothe, or survive difficult emotions
You’ll also examine:
Emotional, physical, mental, and environmental triggers
Hunger, anger, loneliness, exhaustion, and other unmet needs
Times, places, seasons, routines, and menstrual-cycle patterns
People and interactions connected to the urge to use
What the substance appears to help—and what it makes worse
Included resources:
Emotions Tracking Log
Emotions in the Body Map
Wheel of Emotions
“How to Feel Your Emotions” video
Somatic nervous-system regulation exercises
Beginner boundary-setting guides
Step 3
Find solutions
Once you understand what the drug is doing for you, you can begin finding other ways to meet those needs.
You’ll research, test, and personalize alternative coping tools based on your actual personality, energy, environment, resources, and circumstances.
This step explores:
Alternative sources of pleasure and stimulation
Low-, medium-, and high-energy activities
Emotional release through movement and journaling
Grounding and nervous-system regulation
Soothing practices for moments of overwhelm
Inner-child healing and compassionate self-reparenting
Self-hypnosis for exploring subconscious triggers and beliefs
Boundaries around relationships that repeatedly create the urge to escape
You’ll also create an extensive activity and hobby list designed to help fill the empty sober hours—without assuming you will always have money, energy, transportation, or motivation.
The purpose isn’t to replace a powerful drug with a bubble bath and pretend they are equal.
It is to build a diverse set of realistic solutions instead of depending on one destructive solution for every problem.
Step 4
Set up systems
Knowing what might help is not the same as being able to use it when you are triggered.
In this step, you’ll turn possible solutions into a repeatable, personalized system.
You’ll learn how to test different tools, track their effects, and identify which strategies actually help you in specific situations.
Instead of relying on a generic list of coping skills, you’ll begin creating your own response plans for:
Emotional overwhelm
Physical discomfort
Boredom and restlessness
Social triggers
Exhaustion and low motivation
Conflict and rejection
Cravings and moments of impulsivity
Included resource:
Printable Alternative Solutions Tracking Log
The goal is to begin practicing new responses before detox—so they aren’t completely unfamiliar when you need them most.
Step 7
Prepare for detox
Detox is not the beginning of caring about yourself.
By this stage, you will have already started observing your patterns, testing alternatives, creating systems, and changing parts of your environment.
The final step helps you organize that work into a personal exit strategy and prepare for the practical and emotional realities that may accompany detox.
You’ll explore:
Questions to consider when choosing an appropriate detox setting
Ways to prepare your environment and responsibilities
Realistic expectations around rest, sleep, emotions, and recovery time
Strategies for protecting the early post-detox period
What you may need from supportive people
How to plan for known triggers after detox
How to organize the tools and systems developed throughout the course
Included resource:
Detox Preparation Checklist
Pretox does not provide medical detox instructions or tell you how to taper, stop medication, or withdraw independently. Some forms of withdrawal can be medically dangerous. Decisions about stopping substances or medications should be made with an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.
Step 5
Address physical concerns
Sometimes the urge to use begins with a physical feeling.
Exhaustion. Anxiety. Pain. Brain fog. Restlessness. Insomnia. Digestive discomfort. Hormonal changes. The sense that your body simply cannot function without chemical help.
This step teaches you to become more aware of your body’s signals and identify which symptoms most often lead to substance use.
You’ll explore simple lifestyle experiments and learn how to organize questions and observations to discuss with an appropriate healthcare professional.
This section is designed to help you become more informed and attentive to your body—not to diagnose conditions, prescribe treatment, replace medical care, or instruct you to change medication or substance use independently.
Step 6
Change your environment
You cannot always heal inside the same environment you are constantly trying to escape.
This step helps you examine whether your home, routines, relationships, and daily life support the person you are trying to become.
Inspired in part by the principle that environment and connection affect addictive behavior, you’ll begin designing a life that feels safer, more engaging, and less dependent on escape.
You’ll work through:
A Joy and Interest Brain Dump
Decluttering unsupportive possessions and reminders
Evaluating draining or toxic relationships
Designing a soothing space through the five senses
Identifying interests that can lead to healthier community
Creating a practical community action plan
Brainstorming changes that make everyday life more tolerable and enjoyable
You may not be able to change everything immediately.
But you can begin identifying what must change—and stop treating every environmental problem like a personal failure.

I created what I wish I had before detox.
At 22, I was homeless, deeply codependent, and addicted to heroin.
The drug was causing devastating consequences—but it was also helping me survive emotions, shame, pain, and circumstances I did not know how to handle without it.
I learned that removing a substance does not automatically remove the reasons someone needed it.
I could get through detox and still return to the same internal pain, the same patterns, and the same life. When that happened, relapse did not mean I didn’t care. It meant the drug was gone, but the problems it had been solving were still there.
The recovery attempt that changed my life began differently.
Before detox, I spent time working on the life beneath the addiction. I used inner-child hypnosis, subconscious work, emotional awareness, supportive friendships, new interests, and changes to my environment to create something I could return to.
For the first time, detox wasn’t the entire plan.
It was one step inside a much larger one.
My story did not become perfectly linear afterward. Later, dependence on kratom during an intensely stressful period of my life. However, I was able to use this exact same process to successfully detox and recover within a year.
I do not share that because I have a flawless recovery story.
I share it because I don’t.
PreTox was created from lived experience—not from a belief that I have every answer or that one path works for everyone.
I am not a doctor, therapist, or licensed addiction-treatment provider. I am someone who has lived inside addiction, relapse, withdrawal, shame, and the fear that sober life would never feel as good.
This course contains the psychological frameworks, lifestyle changes, practical tools, and questions that I wish someone had helped me explore before I tried to remove the substances I was using to survive.
Healing can begin before detox.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to be sober before starting PreTox?
No. PreTox was specifically created to help people begin preparing before detox. It may also be useful for someone who is tapering under professional care, planning treatment, postponing detox, or already in recovery and creating a plan for vulnerable moments.
PreTox does not tell participants how to taper or stop using.
Is this only for opioid addiction?
No. Although the creator’s primary lived experience includes heroin, Suboxone, kratom, and methamphetamine, the course focuses on patterns that may appear across different forms of substance dependence.
The medical risks and treatment needs associated with different substances vary significantly. Participants should seek substance-specific guidance from a qualified healthcare professional.
Will PreTox help me detox at home?
PreTox can help you think through emotional, environmental, and practical preparation, but it does not determine whether home detox is safe.
It does not provide individualized withdrawal protocols, tapering schedules, medication instructions, or medical supervision.
Do I have to attend AA or NA?
No. PreTox does not require participation in a particular fellowship, religion, spiritual belief system, or recovery identity.
Participants are encouraged to build appropriate support, but that support may look different for different people.
Does PreTox promote a specific medication or treatment path?
No. PreTox does not prescribe medication or decide which medical treatment someone should pursue. Those decisions belong between the participant and an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.
What if I have already relapsed multiple times?
PreTox was created with that experience in mind.
Previous relapse does not prove that change is impossible. It may reveal areas where more preparation, support, environmental change, medical care, or different tools are needed.
Is there a time limit?
No. PreTox is self-paced, and there is no required completion timeline.
Is there a refund policy?
Because PreTox is a digital course with immediate access to its materials, purchases are final and nonrefundable.
Who should not use PreTox?
PreTox is for adults aged 18 and older who can independently read, understand, and work through the material.
It is not appropriate as the primary resource for someone who is medically unstable, severely incapacitated, experiencing an overdose, at immediate risk of harming themselves or someone else, or experiencing potentially dangerous withdrawal symptoms.
Emergency situations require immediate professional help.
